Visited on 6/4/2017 – Picture taken on a Saturday drive while traveling from Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp to proctor Drinking Water Operator Certification exams up west of Willitz, California. This view was from the north side of Lake in the late afternoon, a few hours before sunset. Lake Mendocino is at an elevation of 738 feet in northern California on Highway 20 between Clear Lake and Ukiah, California. Located 2 ½ hours northwest of Sacramento and is a large reservoir in Mendocino County, California, northeast of Ukiah. It covers 1,922 acres and was formed by the construction of Coyote Valley Dam in 1958. The Lake and dam provide flood control, water conservation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The dam also includes a fallout shelter built during the Cold War era to protect against the radiation from nuclear attacks.
