A bucket list of mine is to travel, document & photograph nearly 750 of the largest lakes in the State of California with a minimum of 50 surface acres. My husband, Jeff, our two water loving Chocolate Labradors, Summer & Skye joined me on several of these trips. This blog includes pictures I have taken & information I have gathered: size, elevation and any other unique facts. Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment along the journey & watch my blog for new lakes I have visited.

Stony Gorge Reservoir - Glenn County, California
Visited 02/03/2018 – Jeff and I loaded up our two dogs, Summer and Skye and took a nice weekend camping trip up to Black Butte Lake / Reservoir. We visited three lakes/reservoirs on our trip that are located on the western edge of the Sacramento Valley along the foothills of the Mendocino National Forest. Our second stop was Stony Gorge Reservoir which is the only lake on my list of 300 that is located in Glenn County, California. Located 30 miles west of the town of Willows, this is a beautiful, peaceful reservoir with great scenery of the foothills. Great camping areas on the southeast side of the lake, but they were empty when we visited during this winter month. We traveled around the west side of the lake past the dam through the town of Elk Creek and across the bridge to the north side of the lake where the campgrounds are located. Campgrounds are free here with the exception of the group camp sites. This reservoir is 1,280 acres and rests at an elevation of 800 feet above sea level. Stony Gorge Dam, also called the Orland Project, completed in 1928, is on Stony Creek about 18 miles downstream from East Park Dam and five miles west of Fruto in western Glenn county. The dam is a concrete slab and buttress structure with a height of 139 feet and a crest length of 868 feet. This lake is known as a warm-water fishery and with it's 18-mile shoreline is a pretty lake and a great pleasant retreat for those that love a natural setting.
