Donner Lake - El Dorado County, California

Visited on 7/9/2017 – Picture taken on a weekend camping trip in our Truck Camper with Jeff and our dogs, Summer and Skye up to Truckee area of Northern California.  Donner Lake rests at an elevation of 5,965 feet Donner Lake and was formed primarily through a combination of faulting and glacial action. "Glacial Polishing" of the granite can be seen nearer Donner Summit.  Glacial moraine formed a natural dam to the Lake, upon which most of the State Park is situated..  The lake has a surface area of 960 acres surrounded by giant rocks and a thick pine forest.  Donner Lake is a freshwater lake in Northeast California on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and about 11 miles northwest of the much larger Lake Tahoe.  A moraine serves as a natural dam for the lake. The Lake is located in the town of Truckee, the tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad run along Schallenberger Ridge and closely follow the route of the original transcontinental railroad.  The historic route of the Lincoln Highway, the first automobile road across America and US 40 follows the northern shoreline, then climbs to Donner Pass from where the entire lake may be viewed.  Both the lake and the pass were named after the ill-fated Donner Party, which wintered unintentionally near the lake in 1846. Donner Memorial State Park is on the east end of the lake which I visited and joined a very interesting historical walking tour with a volunteer Docent.

An exhibit located in the Donner Memorial State Park and Museum located at the east
end of the Lake.

View from the top of the road along Schallenberger Ridge that goes to the top of Donnor Summit from the Lake.  Jeff and I viewed several mountain climbers scaling the granite walls of this incline on our way up to the top.
