Visited on 7/2/2017 – Jeff and I took the dogs in the Jeep with the top off on an all-day hike to the Echo Lakes area and into the Desolation Wilderness to visit several lakes that day. Echo Lakes is located 10 miles southwest of Lake Tahoe at elevation 7,539 feet above sea level. Echo Lake is 338 acres with over six miles of shoreline. We took the water taxi from the Echo Lakes Chalet across the Upper and Lower Lake to the trailhead. The Lakes were completely full. Echo Lake is glacier formed, Upper and Lower Echo Lakes are connected by a narrow channel which is passable by boat only during high-water conditions. It was a picture perfect beautiful summer day, not a cloud in the sky and a high of 81 degrees.
Fun little Water Taxi ride across Echo Lakes was 2.5 miles each way that dropped us off at the trailhead on the north end of the Lakes and went thru a narrow channel that connects Lower Echo Lake with Upper Echo Lake. I though Summer was going to jump in a take a swim before we made it across the lake. The water taxi driver said over the years he has only had one dog jump overboard!
There was lots of snow
still on the Pacific Crest Trail as of July 2, 2017 on our way up to Tamarack
Lake and beyond. The dogs loved playing
in the snow.
